Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a birth doula and a midwife?
A midwife is a medical professional that can care for you medically, including prescribing medications, make medical recommendations, perform medical procedures (cervical checks etc). While as a birth doula, I am not a medical professional. I am here to provide comfort measures, to help your voice be heard, and to support you during labor and birth.
What is included in your rates?
My birth doula rate includes 2 prenatal appointments (non medical. These will be focused on helping you with your birth plan, answering questions, getting to know you and your dream for your birth), my being on call 2 weeks before your due date and 2 weeks after (should you go late), being present for your labor and birth, and I will stay for about an hour post partum to help you and your family get settled.
Do I have to pay extra if I'm in labor for a long time?
Absolutely not! You pay a flat rate for my services, no matter how long labor takes!
Can you help me with my birth plan?
Absolutely! There is so much information out there and it can be so confusing. I will walk you through all the different birth plan decisions help to ensure you feel comfortable with the decisions you make.
Will you help me with lactation support?
I'm happy to! I am not a certified lactation counselor, but I have successfully breastfed my own babies, and I'm happy to help get your first latch started and answer any questions you may have! I hope to become a certified lactation counselor soon!
What kind of support do you offer during labor/birth?
During labor I'm there to support you in any way you need me! I am equipped to help with evidence- based education, positioning, advocating etc!
Do you have an office?
No, I do not have an office. I do my work from my computer at my home, and also with you! I am able and willing to meet with you for your appointments anywhere you want, from a Starbucks to your home!
Why should I hire a doula?
You know, not everyone wants or needs a birth doula! But the benefits of birth doulas are amazing! One of my biggest jobs is to advocate for you. Some women feel pressured into certain interventions when they are laboring and that’s not ok! You get to make any decision you want, but someone making you feel like it’s your only choice should not be a factor in the decision making. Whether you want as little interventions as possible, or if you want all the interventions! Both are perfectly good choices and I will advocate for either one!
Where did you do your training?
I got my certification from International Doula Institute!
